Dominican College - “Choral Clarity”
The original site of the Dominican College has been open since 1930 when it began as a small preparatory school. The sisters have since gone on and expanded the buildings to offer Belfast one of the finest Christian educational establishments as it is today.
Part of the school is given over to a wondrously decorated chapel, which befits the school surroundings but which at the same time offered Belfast based AV Company, Niavac an interesting acoustical challenge. With the chapel being a fan shaped building, taking it’s design from the days when the Dominican Order would be seated on one side and the congregation on the other, (they were not allowed to see each other), the difficulty was how to ensure even coverage the length and breadth without causing high levels of reverberation, rendering the sound unintelligible. Steve Kennedy, Niavac’s General Manager looked at several solutions but none quite matched the neatness and simplicity of the Iconyx IC8 speaker from Renkus Heinz.

The Iconyx speakers from Renkus Heinz are designed for exactly this type of application. With their small size( 6” x 6” )and adjustable acoustical centres with multiple beam patterns it is possible to maximise the audio coverage within an environment and give the client a good, comfortable listening experience. After using the Iconyx software to map out the room, Steve called in Simon Druce, beyerdynamic’s National Sales Manager and a full demonstration was performed.
The results were astonishing. With just one Iconyx IC8 speaker situated at the apex of the chapel, the entire area was covered with a gentle yet robust level of audio reinforcement. Both customer and installer were amazed that with just one array, their brief had been met. Steve Kennedy praised the ease of installation, “ it was so quick. Whilst the IC8 was being programmed, the engineers put up the brackets and within minutes we had the whole system up and running. Because the amplifiers are built in I didn’t have to consider large, expensive equipment racks which would have looked so out of place in the chapel.”
Complimenting the Renkus Heinz Iconyx speaker is a Biamp Nexia DSP unit. This takes care of the multiple inputs and has been programmed to allow the users simple, remote volume control. This has thoughtfully been limited in the Nexia software to allow the users to confidently adjust their new sound system.
Niavac are a keen supporter of beyerdynamic and their product portfolio.. Steve cites the support and technical awareness as key reasons for using the Burgess Hill based company so much. “Nothing is too much for them, I can call at any time and be given the answer to my question in minutes which is extremely important when out on site or faced with a last minute tender request.”
